“So I probably didn’t play the greatest today, but I was able to kind of salvage a good round and had a good break on 8 where I holed out from the fairway,” said the two time winner of the event Mickelson. “That was kind of a nice little bonus.”

Lyle was delighted with his round of 65 after his round of 73 on day one. “Yeah, any time you can shoot bogey free around any golf course is pretty good. But this is a golf course that is very, very easy to make bogeys on. Today was good. I didn’t get myself in any trouble and actually holed some putts, which was nice.”

“I made some good par putts today, though, early in the round especially. I got a lot out of the round today, even though I let a couple there slide, but I got a lot out of the round because I really didn’t give myself too many great opportunities for birdie.”

The highlight of Mickelson’s round was a holed approach with a lob wedge at the par four 8th hole for eagle which came just after he had bogeyed the 7th.

Mickelson is commuting to and from this week’s event from his home in Southern California by helicopter a trip which takes 95 minutes door to door, probably quicker than many of those staying much closer.

Mickelson was unable to produce the brilliance of yesterday’s great round of 66 in windy conditions but his round of 70 today was good enough to give him a one shot lead over Pat Perez with Jimmy Walker, Matt Kuchar, Jarrod Lyle, Carl Pettersson and Jonathan Byrd one shot further back.

Perez, who apparently was struggling with his health today, did enough to stay within one of the leader. He putted beautifully today to overcome some indifferent play from tee to green.
